NSW: Oil spill cleanup continues on Sydney Harbour

The cleanup of the massive oil spill in Sydney Harbour will continue today, with Shell
saying half of the oil has been removed.

Two recovery vessels worked through the night to mop up some of the 80,000 litres of light
crude oil which leaked into the waterway on Tuesday night from a tanker at Shell's Gore Cove
terminal at Greenwich in Sydney's north.

NSW Fire Brigades spokesman IAN KRIMMER says the cleanup will continue later this morning
after the spread of the oil spill from the Italian tanker has been assessed.

A Shell spokesman says half of the oil has been removed.

Water police says boat traffic will continue to be restricted near the area today.

Investigations into the leak's cause are continuing.

The ship's owner Fratelli D'Arnato SpA yesterday admitted it was responsible for the spill,
saying it came from a valve left open for around five minutes.

The tanker was due to leave Sydney today but Shell says it will remain until investigations
are completed.

It will take days to clean up the oil, which is visible from the Gladesville Bridge in the
west, under the Harbour Bridge, around the Opera House, and to Rose Bay in the east.
