EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS HEADLINE GLOBAL EDUCATION SPRING SYMPOSIUM

TARBORO, N.

C., March 15 -- Edgecombe Community College issued the following press release:

Two global education experts from East Carolina University will be keynote speakers during the Global Education Spring Symposium at Edgecombe Community College on Thursday, March 24, and Friday, March 25.

Dr. Rosina Chia, associate vice chancellor for global academic initiatives, and Dr. Elmer Poe, associate vice chancellor for academic outreach, will give the keynote address at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, in Keihin Auditorium on the Tarboro campus.

The lecture is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.

Dr. Chia and Dr. Poe pioneered the Global Understanding project at ECU, which unites ECU students with foreign students through inexpensive technology like DVC, Centra, Skype, and Wiki. Since 2004, this project has grown to include 28 institutions from 20 countries. Its innovative low-tech approach has led to several national awards.

Their lecture is part of the Global Education Spring Symposium, a two-day event at the college sponsored by the Diversity and Global Connections Committee to bring cultural awareness to the college and local community.

"We are covering all of our major areas of study, so we will have something of interest for everyone," says Carole Mehle, chair of the Diversity and Global Connections Committee and director of the symposium.

The two-day symposium will begin at 3:30 p.m. on March 24 with a viewing of the documentary "The Listening Project" and a panel discussion on issues in global education. These events will be held in the Cummins Conference Room (Room 152) in the Fleming Building.

Sandhills Community College's exchange program with the Technical University of Vlore in Albania began in 2004. Croft is a professor of respiratory therapy and chair of the health sciences department at Sandhills.

Additional sessions on globalization topics will follow from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. All sessions will be held in the Cummins Conference Room, Fleming 268, and Havens 423 on the Tarboro campus. Room assignments will be provided that day.
