Fed: Australian air safety officials headed to East Timor
CANBERRA, Feb 1 AAP - Australian air safety officials were on their way to East Timortonight to help investigate the crash of a cargo plane which killed six people.
The Russian-built IL-76 went down yesterday while landing in heavy fog near Bacau airporton East Timor's north coast.
It was carrying telecommunications equipment for a Portuguese telephone company settingup operations in East Timor.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) spokesman Peter Saint said four air safetyofficials had left for East Timor to determine the cause of the accident.
"The East Timor government sought the assistance of Australia in investigating thisaccident," he said.
"The investigation will take place with the assistance of the Australian Defence Forceaccident investigators.
"But it will be a civilian investigation solely focused on future safety."
Six people, all believed to be Russian, were killed in the crash.
No Australians were on board the aircraft.
