SA: WorkCover warns about Christmas staff parties

ADELAIDE, Dec 2 AAP - Employers and their workers have been warned to be jolly carefulat staff Christmas parties to avoid legal hangovers.

South Australia's WorkCover Corporation said today employers and employees faced morethan just a headache if their Christmas party got out of hand.

WorkCover Corporation chief executive officer Keith Brown said employers could be liablefor a workers' compensation claim if an employee was seriously injured or killed whiledriving home from a work party - even if they had been drinking alcohol.

Mr Brown also warned employees that inappropriate behaviour at a work party could warrantdismissal.

"Employers have a duty of care under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for theirworkers, and that includes at Christmas or other functions, whether or not they are heldoff or on site," he said in a statement.

Mr Brown said employers should limit the amount of alcohol available at staff parties.

"In addition, employees should remember that in some circumstances inappropriate behaviourat a work party may warrant dismissal," he said.

"The end of year party is a time to celebrate and recognise the achievements of staffand the organisation, within a safe environment where people are not embarrassed or putat risk."
