Fed: NT leads way in per student spending
The Northern Territory government led the nation in spending on public school students
in 1997-98, while Victoria spent the least, according to a new report.
The Report on Government Services says total government expenditure per full-time student
in public schools ranged from $5,640 in Victoria to $9,800 in the NT.
It found the commonwealth's annual average growth in education spending was 3.1 per
cent between 1992-93 and 1997-98, with most of this growth occurring between 1992-93 and
1994-95 - in the last few years of the Labor government.
About 260,000 students left school in 1998, with 37 per cent of those leaving before
finishing Year 12.
Nationally, 78 per cent of girls continued to Year 12, compared with 66 per cent of boys.
Students in capital cities are more likely to finish school than their rural and regional
counterparts.
